Many payroll professionals use National Payroll Week as a way to give back to their communities. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Teach Paycheck and Payroll Basics

Understanding the payroll withholding system empowers individuals to make smarter choices about their paychecks. You can help increase public understanding of the payroll process in many ways:

Volunteer to educate high school aged students for PayrollOrg’s Money Matters program. PAYO provides a teacher’s guide, easy-to-follow lesson plan for the students, and resources to help you find a school or youth group to teach.

Contact your local library or civic organizations and present a workshop on payroll management and compliance issues for small business owners in your area.

Many grocery stores, rec centers, and restaurants have teenage employees who often don’t understand what payroll deductions are or how payroll withholding works. Host a “Paychecks 101” workshop for local businesses that employ teens and young adults. Share the “Understanding Your Pay” eBook or use teach using the Money Matters program materials to make an impact.

Gain Recognition for NPW

People outside of the payroll industry have likely never heard of National Payroll Week. Bridge this gap in your community by gaining local exposure for the national event in the following ways:

Collaborate with the local media outlets (newspapers, radio, or TV stations) to amplify exposure for NPW activities.
Secure a proclamation from your local or state government. The recognition from mayors and governors helps put NPW in the spotlight. Be sure your message is magnified at the local level by submitting a proclamation request early.
Use social media to share the NPW message with your friends, family, neighbors, and associates. Be sure to tag your posts with the official campaign hashtag #PayrollWeek.

Lend a Hand

Adopt a community service project close to your heart and make a difference in your community. Things you can do to give back include:

Raise college scholarship money for teens through a silent auction.

Organize a food drive for your local food bank, homeless shelter or volunteer your efforts at a soup kitchen.

Work with your coworkers or chapter members to raise money or donate gently used clothing to Dress for Success®.

Offer to be a mentor to student business groups.

Arrange a day where volunteers come together to clean up parks, streets, or other public spaces in your neighborhood.
